Terms of Service
Effective date: August 27, 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Five Acres of Freedom ("we," "us") covering your use of the Five Acres of Freedom iPhone app ("the app"). By using the app, you agree to them. They're written to be read.
1. What the app is
Five Acres of Freedom is a record-keeping and planning tool for homesteads: logs, maps, planners, calendars, and reference material for growing food and keeping animals. It runs on your device and stores your records there. It is a notebook and a calculator — not a service you connect to.
2. License
We grant you a personal, non-transferable license to use the app on Apple devices you own or control, as permitted by the App Store terms. Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement applies to your download. You may not copy, resell, or redistribute the app.
3. Your records are yours
Everything you enter in the app — records, maps, photos, plans — is yours. We claim no rights to it, and we never receive it (see the Privacy Policy). Because your data lives only on your device, you are responsible for backing it up — through Apple's device backup or your own means. If your device is lost or the app is deleted without a backup, we have no copy to restore.
4. The app's advice is guidance, not a guarantee
This matters more for this app than most, so plainly:
- Planting dates, frost dates, yield projections, feed and water estimates, butcher windows, incubation timelines, and similar figures are informational estimates. They are drawn from published ranges and, where available, your own logged history. Real outcomes depend on your soil, weather, animals, and management. Do not treat them as professional agronomic or veterinary advice.
- Food preservation carries real safety responsibilities. The app's shelf-life estimates and safety notes (for example, on canning or infused oils) are reminders, not a substitute for current, tested guidance from your national food-safety authority (such as the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning). Always follow tested recipes and official guidance when preserving food.
- Animal husbandry decisions are yours. Breeding, butchering, and animal-care information in the app is general reference, not veterinary advice. Laws on keeping particular species vary by place; complying with your local laws is your responsibility.
5. Third-party services
The app fetches location lookups from Apple and historical weather from Open-Meteo (see the Privacy Policy for exactly what's sent). Those services belong to their operators; we don't control their availability or accuracy, and weather-derived features degrade gracefully when they are unreachable.
6. Purchases and Five Acres Pro
The app is free to download and use. An optional upgrade, Five Acres Pro, unlocks unlimited records, the Money tab, Year in Review, scheduling, the planner totals, CSV export, and the full catalogs. Logging is never paywalled, and if a subscription lapses you lose no data — everything you entered stays yours and visible; only the Pro features lock again.
Pro is sold as in-app purchases through Apple's App Store, billed to your Apple Account:
- Pro Monthly — an auto-renewing subscription, $4.99 (USD) per month.
- Pro Yearly — an auto-renewing subscription, $29.99 (USD) per year, which may include a free trial.
- Pro Lifetime ($99.99 USD) and the limited-time Founding Homesteader ($59.99 USD) — one-time purchases that unlock Pro permanently. They are not subscriptions and never renew or bill again.
Exact prices are always shown in the app before you buy and may differ by country and currency.
Auto-renewal. For the subscriptions: payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase (or at the end of the free trial, if one applies). The subscription renews automatically — and your account is charged for the renewal within 24 hours before the current period ends — unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel your subscription, and turn off auto-renewal, at any time in your device's Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions, or in the App Store. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. If you start a free trial, you can cancel during the trial and pay nothing; any unused portion of a free trial is forfeited if you purchase another Pro product.
Family Sharing, restore, and refunds. All Pro purchases support Apple Family Sharing. On a new device, restore your purchase from the app's Settings → Five Acres Pro → Restore purchases. Refunds are handled by Apple under the App Store terms; you can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
7. No warranty; limits on liability
The app is provided "as is." To the maximum extent the law allows, we disclaim warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, and we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages — including crop loss, animal loss, spoiled food, or lost data — arising from your use of the app. Where a jurisdiction does not allow some of these limits, they apply to the fullest extent permitted there. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you have paid for the app and its in-app purchases.
8. Termination
You can stop using the app at any time; deleting it removes it and its data from your device. We may end this license if you materially breach these terms.
9. Changes
If these terms change, the effective date above will change, and material changes will be noted in the app's update notes before they apply. Continued use after a change is acceptance of the new terms.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
