When to plant

In USDA zone 6, for example: Plant around Mar 4, while the stock is still dormant — bare-root wants to be in the ground before it leafs out.

Dates are the typical window for each zone's average frost dates — your own last frost can differ by a couple of weeks. Zone 10 and warmer is effectively frost-free: plant to the season, not the frost. Southern Hemisphere: shift six months.

Raspberry Types

• Summer-bearing · ~1.5 years · 2–4 lbs/plant — Floricane red — one heavy June crop on last year's canes. Prune out only the canes that fruited.
• Everbearing · 240 days · 2–5 lbs/plant — Primocane red (Heritage, Caroline) — autumn crop on this year's canes; mow the row flat each winter and start over.
• Black · ~1.5 years · 1–3 lbs/plant — R. occidentalis — tip-roots instead of suckering, so it stays put. Keep it far from red raspberries: their viruses kill it.
• Purple · ~1.5 years · 2–4 lbs/plant — Red × black (Royalty, Brandywine) — enormous vigorous canes and the heaviest yields of the family.
