THE pigeon — bred in Belgium for the one talent no other animal offers: released five hundred miles from home, it's on the landing board that evening, fifty-plus miles an hour on its own compass. The sport runs on seamless year bands (AU and IF clubs — the band number is the bird's name; famous lines like Janssen and Sion are variety rank). Thirty-two pigeons hold the Dickin Medal — more than dogs — for carrying messages under fire.
