The hooded pigeon — a mane of feathers wraps the whole head like a monk's cowl (hence the name, from the hooded Jacobin friars). Marie Antoinette kept them at Versailles. THE HUSBANDRY COST IS THE HOOD: the bird can barely see sideways, so it startles easily, feeds and mates clumsily, and serious breeders trim the mane for the breeding season — a show bird and a working parent are two different haircuts.
