The balloon pigeon — a tall, wasp-waisted bird that inflates its crop to a globe half its own size and parades on stilty legs. Charles Darwin kept and measured them for *The Variation of Animals and Plants*; fanciers have bred the pose ever since. The inflated crop is display, not disease — but real crop trouble hides behind it, so pouter keepers handle their birds often.
