THE DOG-TRAINING BIRD — more chukars are raised in America for pointing dogs and preserve hunts than any other game bird, because they're hardy, cheap to grow to size in fourteen weeks, hold for a dog, and flush honestly. “Chukar” is the bird saying its own name. Introduced stock went feral across the Great Basin's cheatgrass canyons and now supports real wild hunting — the rare introduction that worked without becoming a problem. Doesn't need the pheasant's acreage: a covey colony-keeps in a netted run.
