THE pheasant — the white-ringed cock on every game-farm price list, and the ancestor of every wild pheasant in North America: Judge Owen Denny shipped Chinese ring-necks to Oregon's Willamette Valley in 1881 and the birds spread across the grain belt from there. South Dakota made it the state bird of a species that isn't native to the continent. Broodiness has been largely bred OUT by a century of incubator rearing — plan on the machine, or a bantam hen. Everything else in the ring-neck group is a line of THIS SPECIES; they cross freely.
