The biggest and calmest bird in this file — slate-blue with white ear tufts and a curling silver tail, at home in Chinese snow and correspondingly miserable in Gulf heat. TWO THINGS TO PLAN FOR: it commonly waits until its SECOND spring to lay (the 96 weeks above is real), and it DIGS — eared pheasants root with the bill like a badger and will strip a planted aviary to bare earth in a season. Give it depth of leaf litter to work and it'll leave your shrubs alone.
