THE CAPITOLINE GEESE — the birds whose racket woke the garrison when the Gauls came over the wall of Rome in 390 BC, which is the oldest recorded goose job in Europe and still the one this breed is best at. Small and neat enough for a modest lot, which almost no goose is. THE TUFT IS A VARIETY, NOT A BREED (the APA recognizes Tufted Roman), and it is NOT the Crested duck's pom-pom: a Roman's tuft grows on a normal skull and carries NO LETHAL GENE, where crest-to-crest breeding in ducks loses a quarter of the clutch. Two similar-looking crests, one breeding hazard — pinned from both sides.
