Geese ยท breed reference

NOT AFRICAN โ€” it's a swan-goose breed out of China, and the name was a nineteenth-century mistake nobody bothered to fix. TELLING IT FROM THE CHINESE, which is the same species: the African is heavy and carries a DEWLAP, the fold of skin under the chin, on top of the forehead knob; the Chinese is slim, light and knobbed with no dewlap. The heaviest goose that still lays well. THE KNOB CAN FROSTBITE โ€” give shelter in hard cold, or it blackens and sloughs.
