In USDA zone 6, for example: Plant around Apr 29, once frost danger has passed. It's container-grown, so any mild spell after that will do.

Dates are the typical window for each zone's average frost dates — your own last frost can differ by a couple of weeks. Zone 10 and warmer is effectively frost-free: plant to the season, not the frost. Southern Hemisphere: shift six months.

Orange Types

• Navel · ~3 years · 100–200 lbs/plant — Seedless winter eating orange — peels easily, but the juice turns bitter within the hour.
• Valencia · ~3 years · 100–200 lbs/plant — THE juice orange — ripens in summer, holds on the tree for months.
• Blood · ~3 years · 75–150 lbs/plant — Moro, Tarocco — needs cool nights to colour; inland California, rarely Florida.
• Sour · ~3 years · 60–120 lbs/plant — Seville — the marmalade orange, and a common citrus rootstock. Not for fresh eating.
