In USDA zone 6, for example: Plant around Mar 4, while the stock is still dormant — bare-root wants to be in the ground before it leafs out.

Dates are the typical window for each zone's average frost dates — your own last frost can differ by a couple of weeks. Zone 10 and warmer is effectively frost-free: plant to the season, not the frost. Southern Hemisphere: shift six months.

Rose Types

• Hybrid Tea · 90 days · 15–40 stems/plant — One large bloom per long stem — the classic florist/cutting rose; wants the most fuss.
• Floribunda · 85 days · 30–80 stems/plant — Clusters of blooms, nonstop colour — the workhorse bedding rose; easier than a hybrid tea.
• Grandiflora · 90 days · 20–50 stems/plant — Tall, with hybrid-tea-sized blooms in clusters (Queen Elizabeth) — back-of-border.
• Climbing · 120 days · 30–100 stems/plant — Long canes trained on an arch, fence, or pillar — not a true vine; tie it in.
• Shrub · 80 days · 30–80 stems/plant — Landscape/Knock Out and David Austin types — tough, disease-resistant, low-care bloom machines.
• Old Garden · 120 days · 20–60 stems/plant — Heirloom/antique roses — intensely fragrant, often once-blooming in a glorious June flush.
• Miniature · 75 days · 20–50 stems/plant — Everything scaled down — the container, edging, and windowbox rose.
