Black Soldier Fly ยท species reference
Larvae eat what nothing else will โ scraps, spent grain, manure โ and then HARVEST THEMSELVES: at maturity they crawl up a ramp out of the bin and drop into a bucket, which is the whole design. The adult fly has no mouthparts: it doesn't eat, doesn't bite, and isn't a disease vector, unlike the housefly it gets mistaken for. Native to the southern US and wild-caught by scent in warm months; northern keepers run it seasonally or start colonies indoors.
